On Thursday, December 17, the Fishtown Beer Runners will turn eight! What began as two friends going out on a run has grown into a weekly running club of new friends from across the city running together.  As I reflect back on 2015, I’m amazed how much FBR has grown in both numbers and in activities.  I am most proud of the many people who have transformed their lives through the power of running and credit FBR for being a source of support and encouragement.  FBR has inspired many non-runners to make their first run, smokers to put down their cigarettes, casual runners to become marathoners, and marathoners to become ultra-marathoner.  Thanks to you, FBR supported many local businesses through our weekly Thursday night runs, and raised money and volunteered for worthy causes including Achilles International, Philabundance, Back On My Feet, and many others. Thank you to all of you for making FBR a dynamic running club that encompasses more than running.  Cheers to  another great year and 2016 promises to be even more exciting! “To The Professor!”

In keeping with he Holiday Season,  there will be a clothing drive for the St. Francis Inn. All gently used winter clothing is greatly appreciated, with a special focus on men’s winter wear.  We will have collections bins at our start location in Fishtown and at Standard Tap.  If you would like to make a direct drop off to the Inn with other clothing, please visit their thrift shop’s website for more information

The St. Francis Inn’s main service is the soup kitchen, in recent years the Inn has been serving 450+ people daily.  They  serve 365 days a year, opening in our doors in December 1979 and not missing a meal since. Outside the soup kitchen they also have a Women’s Center (which FBR Katie Horan directs), an Urban Center, and a Marie’s Closet Thrift Shop.  Marie’s Closet is run by the staff of St. Francis Inn and tireless volunteers. Men’s and Women’s clothing, along with housewares, shoes, children and infant clothing, can all be found inside!   Each month, 300 to 400 changes of clothing are given to the guests of St. Francis Inn. As we enter the colder part of the year, they are constantly in need of warm winter clothing. Many of their guests experience homelessness and an extra layer can make all the difference.

Our anniversary party will be on the 2nd floor of Standard Tap. We will have full access to both the Up Stairs Bar and the Porch.  The Porch will be heated. The 2 bars will make service run more smoothly.   Keep in mind the Porch Bar will be CASH ONLY.  The inside bar will take cards and cash.  Our very own Justin Relkin will bake and provide another tremendous anniversary cake!!
