Frankford Hall is graciously offering us a special Achilles/FBR menu with tremendous discounts on their amazing beer selection and delicious food.  We’ll be selling bracelets for $5 that will be good for drink and food specials from 7-10pm.  All full Liters (normally $12-14) will be $8; 1/2 Liters (normally $6-8) will be $4!!!! Food will be offered at Happy Hour prices.  Achilles will be raffling off gift cards from Philadelphia Runner and Philadelphia Brewing Company.   At 8:30 PM,  we will do our customary toast “To the Professor” and show this wonderful 8 min video about the Achilles-Philly Chapter.  Remember to bring your ID, under 21 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Wrists bands are $5 and available to both runners and non-runners.  The bands entitle you to the drink/food special from 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM.

Non-runners can go directly to Frankford Hall which is located at 1210 Frankford Ave.  Runners will gather at our usual starting point in Fishtown. We will run down Susquehanna to Frankford Ave., and down to Frankford Hall, which is approximately 1 mile.  For those who want to run longer, you are encouraged to run to Market Street and points beyond and then circle back. Achilles International is an organization whose mission is to enable people with all types of disabilities to participate in mainstream athletics in order to promote personal achievement, enhance self esteem, and lower barriers to living a fulfilling life.  The Philadelphia Chapter launched last year and is making a difference in peoples’ lives.  The group consists of disabled athletes and volunteer guides  who together for fun and/or train for races of all distances from 5ks to marathons.  Achilles welcomes athletes and volunteers of all abilities. They run every Saturday morning at 9:00 AM from 1601 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia.  Check out this wonderful video about the the Philly Chapter.

On Thursday, June 13, FBR is hosting  Liters & Wursts:Achilles Meet & Greet Fundraiser at Frankford Hall from 7-10 PM.  This will be a wonderful opportunity to meet the Achilles crew and to learn more about the Philly Chapter where several of your FBR friends volunteer. FBR, artist and music aficionado, Trish Houck,  is about to embark on her 6th Breast Cancer 3-Day  journey.   She will walk 60 miles over 3 days which is  2+ marathons in a weekend.  Over the six years, Trish has walked 360 miles and  and devoted 18 days to raise money to fight breast cancer.  According to Trish:

I joined the walk at first because it was a challenge, walking that far and raising over $2,000.  But then it became personal. A close friend and I had started scheduling our mammograms on the same day each year.  She wanted to skip it once because it was a busy holiday time. I said no, we have to go. They found her tumor at the earliest possible stage and now she’s been cancer free for over 6 years.

Every year I hear about another friend, coworker or neighbor  that is diagnosed.  They benefit from the new treatments and I want to help continue the research so that a cure is found I want my grand kids to say that they don’t know anyone that has suffered from breast cancer. So I’m walking and fundraising again.

FBR is supporting Trish in her efforts by hosting a special beer run on Thursday, May 30 to  Strangelove’s, one of Philly’s newest establishments.  If you wish to participate $5 will get you a bracelet that will give you Strangelove’s happy hour prices from 7:30 to 9:30 PM. You will also get a pink bandana, a raffle for a door prize and Trish’s deepest gratitude.  There will also be a prize for the best dressed boobies – male or female! Work it!

Shortly after the Liberty Bell cracked and long before ground was broken for City Hall, McGillin’s Olde Ale House threw open its doors. Its beer taps have been flowing since 1860 — making it the oldest continuously operating tavern in Philadelphia. McGillin’s has outlasted Strawbridge’s, the Civil War and even Prohibition.
